There are big changes in store this season:
For the first time, we will produce seven
mainstage plays, which will take the season through September 30.
Prior to our regular season, we will produce
the latest in our series of collaborations with area high schools.
Our subscription series includes a contemporary
musical, a new adaptation of a classic, new talent, returning favorites,
and James Whitmore (Sr. and Jr.)!
Season Extended Through
September 30!
Returning Player Todd Almond will reprise his award-winning role
in the one-man tour de force I AM MY OWN WIFE, marking the first
time we have produced a seventh mainstage show. Almond, well-known
to Peterborough audiences for his roles in YOU’RE A GOOD MAN
CHARLIE BROWN, A NUMBER, LAUGHING STOCK, and PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES
as well as his frequent appearances in post-show cabarets, has performed I
AM MY OWN WIFE at the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati (the first
regional theatre production of the show), Actors Theatre of Louisville,
and Florida Studio Theatre.
One of the most honored plays in recent memory,
I AM MY OWN WIFE won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize and the 2004 Tony Award
for best play, and tells the fascinating and true story of Charlotte
von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite. Portraying more
than 30 characters, Almond tells the story of Charlotte’s
survival of both the Nazi and East German Communist regimes.
Only subscribers may purchase tickets at this
time for I AM MY OWN WIFE for the special discounted price of $25.
The play is not part of any subscription package; however, Barn
Door Pass holders may use their tickets for the show.
High School Collaboration
- Picnic, directed by Gus Kaikkone, May 31 - June 3
In collaboration with ConVal, Conant, Milford and Mascenic High
Schools as well as Franklin Pierce and Keene State Colleges, The
Peterborough Players is proud to present Picnic, the Pulitzer prize
winning play written by William Inge. Picnic will be performed Thursday,
May 31 at 8pm; Friday, June 1 at 8pm; Saturday June 2 at 2pm and
8pm, and Sunday, June 3 at 2pm.
Picnic takes place in the backyards of two houses
in Kansas during Labor Day weekend. One house belongs to Flo Owens,
who lives there with her two maturing daughters, Madge and Millie,
and a boarder, Rosemary Sydney, who is a spinster school teacher.
The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly
and invalid mother. This neat little feminine world is thrown into
chaos with the arrival of Hal Carter, a mischievous and irresistible
drifter who upsets the orderly, low-key town with his false stories
and macho behavior. Inge's exploration of small town life and his
focus on family relationships has struck a chord with audiences
since its debut in 1953 and we hope you will enjoy it too.
Nine ConVal, Conant, and Milford students including
Julia Bascom, Caroline Eichler, Emily Fernandes, Griffen Fletcher,
Christina Howard, Caity Joy, Sam MacIntire, Kel Sauer, and EliseWilliams
have been cast along with a three professional actors James M. O’Connell,
Kathy Manfre, and Jon L. Egging in this production. It is a chance
to give the students, most of who are interested in pursuing a theatrical
career, a chance to work in a professional theatrical environment.
They are asked to work on a professional schedule and are supported
by a design and production team from the Players. The show is directed
by Players Artistic Director Gus Kaikkonen, Franklin Pierce professor
Lee Dunholter is designing the set, Lisa Liebetrau is designing
the costumes and Craig Lindsay from Keene State is designing the
lights.
Picnic is rated “PG”.
To celebrate
the MacDowell Colony’s Centennial, the Players will produce
three plays written or adapted by Colony Fellows:
THE LONG CHRISTMAS DINNER by Thornton Wilder,
I AM MY OWN WIFE by Doug Wright, and A
DOLL HOUSE adapted by Gus Kaikkonen.
