Since 1936, a strong theater training program has been a core component of the Players. In 1996, this program expanded into the development of a Second Company, a group of 12 to 17 interns and apprentices who hail from all over the country. Interns and apprentices are selected for these coveted slots through highly competitive auditions. They work with the professional company in the shops and backstage, appear in support roles on the mainstage, and perform in two productions for children and families.
Each season Second Company productions showcase works that are classics of children’s literature. For many of the children, this will be their first experience to see live actors on stage. The experience is enhanced by the youth and enthusiasm of the young actors and their interaction with the audience.
Interns are paid a weekly salary of $120/week; apprenticeships are unpaid positions. Interns and apprentices are housed at no charge in cabins (constructed in 2013) adjacent to the theatre. Equity Membership Candidate (EMC) points are available for all interns and apprentices.
And what is a day in the life of a Second Company member? Take a look at this video from 2013 which goes through the intern's first day with the company.
