PETERBOROUGH PLAYERS ANNOUNCES 2024 SUMMER SEASON FEATURING COMEDY, INTRIGUE, HISTORICAL FIGURES, A LITERARY CLASSIC, AND A BIG MUSICAL.
The Players 91st year offers the chance to experience the joys of live theatre with a summer of audience favorites!
The Peterborough Players proudly announces a season of beloved favorites and an intriguing new title inviting the Monadnock region to experience the treasured summer tradition of 91 years of professional theatre in the historic barn theatre on Hadley Road.
NOISES OFF, by Michael Frayn kicks off the summer. Often called the funniest play ever written, it offers a hilarious look at the inner workings of a British theatre troupe and the fast-paced, on-stage and off-stage antics of the actors, The winner of both Tony and Olivier awards, NOISES OFF follows a rag-tag theatre company as they rehearse and perform a disastrously awful sex farce on a provincial tour. Outsized egos and emotions, slamming doors and errant plates of sardines start the summer with a bang!
Ira Levin’s classic DEATHTRAP is a fiendishly clever comedy/thriller with an intricately fashioned plot that holds the record for the longest-running play of the genre on Broadway. Murder, psychic messages, misplaced passion, and jealousy are layered in this play-within-a-play-about-a-play, which veers from gasps to laughter to surprise after surprise.
What is summer without romance? And why not literature's greatest romance, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE? Jane Austen’s classic tale of love, social mores, vanity, misunderstandings, “pride” and “prejudice” leads unerringly towards a happy ending. It is the ultimate summer romance.
Simultaneously thought-provoking and hysterically funny, Richard Strand’s BEN BUTLER, puts history center-stage in the true story of the Civil War General who, with the help of an escaped slave, paved the way to the Emancipation Proclamation. Butler, the lawyer turned general and Shepherd Mallory, a brilliant and audacious refugee slave, argue their way towards mutual understanding and respect. Their high-stakes discourses on race, law, and humanity are smart, thought-provoking and side-splittingly funny. The NY Times called BEN BUTLER “ clever without being glib, meaningful without being pretentious… a funny and impressive mixture.”
MAN OF LA MANCHA, brings a beloved big-book musical back to the Player’s stage.Since its premiere in 1965 it has enjoyed four Broadway revivals and won multiple Tony Awards, Its message of hope and idealism are made all the more poignant and powerful by its brilliant theatricality. Imprisoned during the Spanish Inquisition, Don Miguel de Cervantes and his man-servant, Sancho Panza enact the story of Don Quixote, bringing the prisoners into the play within a play’s action and inspiring them to “Dream the Impossible Dream.” Achingly beautiful melodies and romantic lyrics encourage us to take responsibility for making the world a better place by uplifting the most downtrodden among us. “To dream the impossible dream. To fight the unbeatable foe…To try when your arms are too weary…To reach the unreachable star.” A glorious season finale.
“Our 2024 summer season has been crafted to bring our entire community together at The Players.” explains Charles Morey. “As Interim Producing Artistic Director I’ve assembled plays that run the gamut from riotous comedy, mystery, romance, historical drama and the uplifting experience of great musical story-telling. I hope everyone will experience the broad sweep of human emotions reflected in these five plays; to take joy and delight in these deftly crafted stories that, restore our spirits, lift up and inspire us - all while delivering you a great night of theatre. Never has the power of live theatre, the ritual of sharing stories in a communal space, been more important in connecting communities and nurturing a sense of belonging and our common humanity.”
